How to Make Hash: A Complete Guide to Making the Best Hash

Have you been wondering how to make hash but can’t find a good article to guide you? Worry no more as the calvary has arrived. In this detailed guide, we’ll teach you how to make hash and equip you with everything you need to know.

You can use several techniques to make some good hash, including the dry ice hash method and more. Most of the DIY methods are simpler than the more technical ones. Nonetheless, we’ll take you through the best methods in a simple-to-follow way.

Hash is simply the cannabis trichomes that are mechanically separated from the plant. These are then pressed together to make a brick. The trichomes are used because they are the richest part of your plant.

These trichomes are full of cannabinoids. So, dive deeper to see what hash really is.

What is Hash?

Hash is the substance you get when you separate trichomes in the cannabis plant from the rest of the plant material.

Trichomes are the visible hair-like structures found on the surface of marijuana buds. You can have a closer look at the trichomes if you use a magnifying glass or a microscope. These trichomes contain THC, CBD, and terpenes.

There are several hash types, including full melt ice water hash, hash rosin, flower rosin, and charas. The ice water hash completely melts in the banger.

You’ll find most of the trichomes on mature cannabis flowers. Nonetheless, you can also source them from other parts of the plant. However, the rest of the plant material has smaller concentrations of trichomes.

What Parts are Rich in Trichomes?

How to Make Hash

Here are some of the plant material parts that you can get a good amount of trichomes.

a). Male Plants

If you are a grower, you probably throw away the male plants to prevent them from pollinating your female plants. However, if you want to make has, you may want to hold on to these male plants a while longer.

You can use the male plants to make homemade hash. Although the cannabinoid content is lower than that of females, you can tell get trichomes from them.

b). Sugar Leaves

Sugar leaves are the small spiky leaves that are embedded within the marijuana flowers. The name comes from the fine dusting of trichomes that you find on their surface.

c). Fan Leaves

Fan leaves are the most conspicuous leaves on the cannabis plants. They are still valuable to making hash, although they don’t have as much keif as the sugar leaves.

d). Dried Buds

Finally, we have dried buds which are the best option. You can use dried buds when you are dry sifting. We’ll look at this method later. It is one of the easiest techniques when making hash.

What Are the Methods of Hash Making?

There are several methods. These techniques can be categorized into solventless methods and solvent-based methods. Both of these methods involve collecting.

a). Solventless Methods

These methods are the more traditional techniques of making hash. When using a solventless method, you’ll notice that it is more mechanical. You may end yo setting up a silkscreen or using your hands.

When using a silkscreen, you’ll separate the trichomes from the rest of the plant material by rubbing the dried plant into the screen. Once you’ve transformed the trichomes into a pile of high-quality kief, you can heat them and press them into snakes, spheres, or blocks.

b). Solvent-Based Methods

Unlike solventless methods, these techniques require you to use solvents. You can think of these methods as the more modern way of doing things. You’ll use carbon dioxide, butane, or propane to extract the terpenes and cannabinoids from the trichomes.

Ensure that you purge all the solvent residue before you consume the hash. Finally, we’ll show you how to make hash safely using these methods. Hash-making will be an easy endeavor once you’re done with this article.

If you opt for butane hash oil (BHO), you’ll need to put it through a vacuum desiccation chamber. You can also whip it into the wax with a hot plate.

We don’t recommend doing this technique at home since it’s very flammable.

Now that we’ve categorized the methods of making hash let’s dive into the specific methods.

How to Make Hash

1. Bubble Hash Method

Bubble hash is also known as ice ash, and you can use a coffee filter to make it. If you love coffee, the bubble hash method might be your next favorite thing. Although bubble hash is not the best method for making hash, it is an easy option.

The reason bubble hash is not the best compared to others, like the dry ice method, is that the trichome heads will not be separated into different microns.

Nonetheless, you can expect this bubble hash method to be convenient and fast to make bubble hash at home.

What You Need

  • A container
  • A coffee filter
  • Ice water
  • Trimmed cannabis
  • A very large bottle
  • A sieve

Steps to Follow

  1. Place your cannabis material into a glass container that has ice and water. Shake it for about three to four minutes.
  2. Leave it to rest for 20 minutes. Then, remove the plant matter left behind.
  3. Wait till you see the sediment at the bottom of the container. This is the bubble hash.
  4. Pour about 2/3 of the water from the container into the extra-large bottle. Ensure that you pour slowly to avoid mixing the hash with the rest of the water.
  5. Add more ice water to the container and let it rest for about three minutes. Then, repeat step 4 and step 5 of the hash-making process again. This is to make sure that you get as much bubble hash as possible.
  6. Drain water from the bottle without draining any hash. Strain what remains using the coffee filter. Squeeze to remove any excess water.
  7. Dry the wet and cold bubble hash.
  8. Enjoy.

2. Charas Method

How to Make Hash

This is the easiest method to use when making hash, although it’s not as profitable as the rest. Unlike the dry ice hash method and other complicated methods of hash-making, this process is fairly simple and doesn’t need any instruments.

All you need are your hands. If you visit Nepal and India, you’ll find the locals making charas using this method. You don’t need a hash bag or any other complicated instrument. The only drawback to this beautiful process is that it is time-consuming.

You can use this same process if you want something to do with your hands as you chill or as a meditative practice. The cannabis community can attest to the fact that these popular methods are very calming.

What You Need

  • Clean hands
  • Dried cannabis buds. Avoid using trimmed cannabis
  • Time

Steps to Follow

  1. Wash your hands extremely well. You want to get high-quality charas that is free from contaminants.
  2. Remove the stems and leaves.
  3. Place the cannabis bud between your palms and roll in a gentle circular motion. Use minimal pressure.
  4. Continue step 3 until you a thick reason starts to form on your palm and fingers. This is the charas or hash.
  5. Scrape this hash off onto a clean surface. Press it to create a ball or small block.
  6. Repeat the process with as many buds as possible till you get your desired result.

3. Kief Hash Method

Kief is essentially cannabis in the form of very fine powder. Hash production using this method is used by many cannabis users since you don’t need complicated instruments like dry ice, hash bags, or bubble bags.

The difference between the kief method and the sifting method is that the hash is not as fine as the dry sift method. You can use an ordinary kitchen sieve to do this work. However, note that you may get parts of the plant in the product.

What You Need

  • Three-phase Dichavador
  • Pieces of cannabis

Steps to Follow

  1. Ensure that the three-phase Dichavador is clean.
  2. Pass your cannabis through the three-phase Dichavador.
  3. Collect the powder.
  4. Use pressure and heat to join this hash.

4. Dry Sifting

Here’s another traditional method where you get to use your buds to get higher-quality hash. You’ll find this method widely used in Morocco, one of the oldest and biggest hash-producers in the world.

To get the high-quality collected material, you’ll pass the cannabis trim through a very fine sieve. Then, the trichomes fall to the surface, where you collect them.

A tip you can use is to freeze your trimmed cannabis overnight in a ziplock bag. What this does is that it separated the trichomes from the rest of the plant.

What You Need

  • A very fine sieve
  • Parchment paper
  • A strong card
  • Trimmed cannabis

Steps to Follow

  1. Place your parchment paper on a clean surface. You can use your kitchen table or kitchen counter if you choose to make hash at home. Ensure that the circumference of your sheet of parchment paper is larger than your sieve.
  2. Place your sieve above the parchment paper. You can use a fabric that has fine holes as your sieve. You want to get a very fine hash.
  3. Place your trimmed cannabis into your sieve.
  4. Gently move the cannabis across the sieve using your hands. As you continue with the extraction technique, you should see some dust forming on your parchment.
  5. Continue step 4 until you get 10-20% of the mass of dried buds you are using. For example, if you use 100g of dried cannabis buds, you should get more than 10g of hash.
  6. Once satisfied with what you see, use the card to collect the hash and press it. Again, avoid using your credit card because you don’t want sticky resin on your card.

5. Rosin Hash Method

If you never thought you’d be mentioning marijuana and flat iron in the same sentence, don’t worry. Neither we were. This method is easiest to do if you want to make dabbing cannabis concentrate at home.

You can use the flat iron to extract the hash. Say goodbye to complicated methods like dry ice and others. You won’t need hash bags or other complicated tools. Ensure you use a flat iron that has proper temperature control to extract this rosin hash.

What You Need

  • Flat iron
  • Parchment paper
  • Cannabis flower

Steps to Follow

  1. Separate your cannabis flower into small proportions. About one centimeter should be fine.
  2. Cut your parchment paper into pieces that are about 8cm x 16cm. Fold these pieces in half.
  3. Place a bud into each piece of paper and press with the flat iron for about five seconds.
  4. You should see a few drops of golden resin around the crushed bud. Use a pair of tweezers to remove the resin and store it properly.
  5. Repeat the process until you’re satisfied.

Frequently Asked Questions About How to Make Hash

1. What is the difference between weed and hash?

Weed often refers to the entire cannabis plant, while hash is the resin or sap derived from the plant. You’ll find that hash has a higher concentration of psychoactive chemicals. It is a concentrate, after all.

You are more likely to feel higher effects when you consume hash as opposed to smoking weed. Hash is a much more concentrated form of cannabis.

2. How do I know if my hash is good?

Checking the color, taste, consistency of the hash will tell you if it’s good or not. For example, the color of high-quality dry-sift hash ranges from a light yellowish color to a reddish-brown color. For finger hash, a good hash should have a brownish-black color.

If you see that it has more green in it, know that it contains a significant amount of plant matter. When it comes to consistency, dry sift hash shouldn’t be too dry why hand-rubbed hash should not be too sticky.

Hand-rubbed hash should be dense and have a uniform consistency. The taste of good hash is dependant on a couple of factors. Nonetheless, good-quality dry sift has an earthier taste, while hand-rubbed hash has a more floral flavor.
